TQHA Announces New Scholarship Award Program

Could you be the next "Face of TQHYA?" Launching February 17, "Face of TQYHA" is a scholarship contest open to current or new members of the Texas Quarter Horse Youth Association. Contestants are to submit a 30 second to one minute video describing what the "Face of TQHYA" should look like, i.e. service to the Texas Horse industry, mentoring other youth at school or horse shows, responsibility with the family race horse or ranching business, etc. BE CREATIVE! First prize is a $2500 scholarship and second place is a $1,000 scholarship. Honorable mention awards will also be given. The contest runs through May 1, 2011. Email your video to youth@tqha.com along with your name, address and contact number.

Judges will select the top 5 videos from videos submitted. The top 5 videos will be posted on the TQHA website and TQHA FaceBook pages where the public can vote on who will be the "Face of TQHYA."

Not only will the winner receive a $2,500 college scholarship, the winning contestant's video will also be re-shot by a professional production company and featured in all TQHA media and TQHYA promotion
for one full year.

National Ag Day Essay Contest

The Agriculture Council of America has announced the National Ag Day Essay Contest for 2011. This theme for this year is American Agriculture: Your Food. Your Farmer.

Students (grades 9-12) are invited to submit an original, 450-word essay or a two-minute video essay about the importance of agriculture. The national written essay winner and video essay winner will each receive a $1,000 prize and round-trip ticket to Washington, D.C., for recognition during the Celebration of Ag Dinner held March 15, 2011 at the USDA.

2011 Williamson County 4-H Adult Leaders Association Scholarship

The intent of the Williamson County 4-H Adult Leaders Association Scholarship is to provide an equal amount awarded to equally qualified applicants. Qualified is considered a good 4-H learning experience and an appropriately completed application.

Unqualified applications are those that have not demonstrated 4-H learning experiences, and have not adequately completed the scholarship application. It is not our intent to award a scholarship to unqualified applicants. A committee consisting of two County Extension Agents, two community leaders, and two 4-H adult leaders will judge the applications. The decision made by the committee will be final.

Money must be claimed within 2 years of being awarded to recipient.

2011 San Antonio Livestock Exposition Inc Rural Youth Award

The San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. established the Rural Youth Award 55 years ago to honor youth leaders across the State of Texas. Today, this award provides recognition for 4-H and FFA members who have shown outstanding leadership in their organization and community. Each organization conducts its own nomination and selection process and submits 20 honorees to represent their respective organization. Texas youth involved in 4-H and FFA may apply for this award through only one organization.

Youth who apply must be at least 16 years of age and a high school junior or senior as of August 31, 2010.

Youth must have been an active 4-H member for at least 3 years prior to applying for the award. Youth must plan to enroll in a degree plan that is on the SALE scholarship approved list of majors to be eligible.

Youth must be willing to participate in the 2011 Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship Awards Orientation, Presentation, and Banquet during the 2011 Texas 4-H Roundup on Monday, June 13, 2011 in College Station, Texas.

State Fair of Texas Scholarship

For the past 17 years, the fair has provided livestock scholarships to deserving youth and given them the aid needed to attend college. The fair has awarded 622 youth livestock scholarships to-date and continues to help students further their education. To be eligible to apply, students must have competed at the fair in a livestock event, such as showing an animal or public speaking. In 2008, the scholarship amount increased to $5,000 and is renewable for up to four years.

Scholarship winners are chosen based on academics, financial need, and involvement at the fair. Each year, the State Fair of Texas changes the lives of graduating seniors, by giving them an opportunity to further their education, which otherwise, might not have been possible.

Texas 4-H and Youth Development Opportunity Scholarship

The Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program and the 4-H Youth Development Foundation is once again please to offer to our senior high school 4-H members and current college students the opportunity to apply for an Opportunity Scholarship through the Texas 4-H Program.
What is new for 2011:
*Value of scholarships will range from $1,000 to $16,000.
Applicants that are invited and participate in interviews are guaranteed a scholarship.

*Applicants will NOT be excused from either the face-to-face interview or the scholarship assembly.

*Applicants and families should plan accordingly based on the dates provided in the guidelines.

*Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has raised the value of their scholarships from $15,000 to $16,000.

*Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has raised their maximum amount of financial aid/scholarships that an applicant can have confirmed from $40,000 to $75,000.

Location: Texas 4-H Conference Center

This retreat will be an excellent opportunity for senior 4-H members ages 13-19 to learn numerous basic personal skills and leadership techniques.
Our unique theme this year is “Leaders for Life!”

Participants must be 13 years of age on or before August 31, 2009. Counties may register as many youth as they wish, provided an adequate number of chaperones accompany them.
Registration will be conducted on 4-H Connect.
Registration fees will be $100 per youth. Adult chaperone registration will be $65.00 per person.
Linens will not be provided!!!

Workshop Objectives

The Texas Teen Retreat will focus on various aspects of leadership to enhance 4-H program
involvement for senior age youth. The following objectives will be addressed:

Holiday Craft Fun!

LOCATION: CEO Training Room

WHO: 4-H/Clovers, EE members/husbands, CEO staff, grandparents, friends/family

COST: $5 per person to cover supplies and pizza lunch.

We will be making several last minute holiday crafts and gifts, including a simple gingerbread house. If you can, please bring a bag of candy to share for decorating the houses.

To participate in our cookie exchange, bring 2 dozen cookies and copies of the recipe. Ribbon awards will be given out for Best Decorated, Most Creative, Best Tasting and Best All Around cookie. We will divide them up and everyone will go home with cookies, recipes and crafts.

RSVP by Thursday December 16th so we can plan for enough supplies. Parents can drop off children if they need to do some shopping. Be ready to pick up your children at 2:00 pm.

Youth Day - February 5, 2011 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Hosted by the School Tours Committee of San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Youth Day is an entire day during the San Antonio Rodeo dedicated to Youth! During this day, 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA members from across Texas gather together to showcase their organizations, activities and project work. These members set up exhibits and interactive activity booths for young visitors attending the Stock Show and Rodeo. Children are treated to arts and crafts, games demonstrations, sweet treats and education activities. All the fun of Youth day is included with your rodeo or grounds ticket.

In addition to these fun, interactive booths, Youth Day also plays host to a photography contest, a salute to S.A.L.E. Scholarship recipients, a fashion show, and live entertainment. Rounding out the day's activities is the famous "Wagon and Wheelbarrow Parade" through the Rodeo grounds on Saturday. During this creative, eccentric parade, youth from the participating organizations dress in costumes and decorate their "vehicles" to parade around the grounds and entertain spectators.

School Tours

The School Tours programs gives young students and their teachers the opportunity to learn about the past and present methods of agriculture. School Tours are offered to all students in Kindergarten through third grade attending public, private, and home schools. High School aged students of the 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA organizations from South Texas are invited each year to serve as Tour Guides for this committee. Tour Guides assist in educating the students about agriculture and its valued importance, while sharpening their leadership and responsibility skills. Tours last 2 - 2 1/2 hours.

During the tour, students will visit a number of areas where they can view exhibits and demonstrations. Animal Adventures, Dairy Center and the Horse Center are just a few of the areas student will visit to learn more about agriculture through interactive hand-ons displays and view live farm animals that include: cattle, swine, sheep, goat, poultry and horses. The tour also visits the Family Fair area of the grounds. This area had additional exhibits, live entertainment and petting zoos.

Poinsettia Sales

This year the Poinsettia sales will be used to support the overall 4-H program. Proceeds will assist with scholarships, training, and workshops.

The 4-H Adults Leaders meet every other month for business and to discuss fund-raising activities. This year we are selling beautiful poinsettia plants in a 6 1/2" red pot from Glass Nursery in Cameron, Texas. We encourage all parents and youth to sell plants.

The deadline for ordering is November 18, 2010. They will be delivered on December 5, 2010 to the County Extension Office.

The cost is $11.00 per poinsettia. Color choices are: Red, White, Jingle Bell and Pink.

The Texas 4-H Youth Development Program is proud to announce their newest program, the ATV Safety Program. This new program allows any 4-H youth (age 12 or older) or family member, AgriLife Extension agent or employee to take the 4-hour ASI Rider Course free.

PEC's 2011 Youth Tour Contest

It is time for the 2011 Youth Tour Contest sponsored by Pedernales Electric. Six high school contestants will win an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., on June 9-17, 2011. PEC winners will join other students from across America to meet their congressional representative and tour our nation's capital and several historical sites.

You can gain statewide or national recognition for your 4-H participants who demonstrate outstanding volunteer community service by joining the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a prestigious, independent awards program that recognizes young people in grades 5-12 on the basis of their volunteeer activities. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principles.

Last year, 137 county 4-H programs selected honorees in this prestigious youth recognition program, and 17 4-H'ers were among the 102 State Honorees for 2010. This recognition is extremely beneficial to 4-H'ers who have performed exemplary acts of service in their communities and to 4-H as a whole.

The implementation and information packet along with the online application instructions include an overview of the program and the documents you will need to nominate 4-H members in your county.
